Francuska architektura to nie moja specjalność, ale będąc tu nie sposób nie zauważyć, że ta dziedzina sztuki specjalną pozycję w kraju nas Sekwaną, Loarą, Mozelą, Rodanem, Renem i Saoną. Począwszy od wielkiej osi Luwr-Łuk Triumfalny-Grand Arche w La Défense - na której końcu, o czym wiedzą nieliczni (w tym piszący te słowa), leży Cergy-Pontoise, miasto mojego zesłania, o czym zaświadcza wieśniacki laser widoczny nocami - przez hausmannowską przebudowę Paryża, wieżę Eiffla, projekty w rodzaju Biblioteki Mitterranda lub Instytutu Świata Arabskiego, aż po budownictwo bardziej peryferyjne, co nie znaczy, że mniej monumentalne. Do ostatniego zaliczam np. mój uniwersytet i reszta tak zwanego Grand Centre w Cergy, czy, pożal się Boże, Ogród Praw Człowieka w Cergy-Saint Christophe, skąd emitowany jest w stronę metropolii paryskiej rzeczona wiązka zielonego światła przedłużająca magiczną oś, dowodzącą ponadczasowego geniuszu francuskich inżynierów.
Jednak monumentalna i symboliczna architektura to w tym kraju nie tylko domena Ile-de-France. W trakcie ostatniej wyprawy do Reims odkryłem coś, co zaparło mi dech w piersiach. Budynek tamtejszego uniwersytetu zaatakował mnie przypadkiem i znienacka, przypominając mi wszystkie pamiętane z dzieciństwa książki i filmy o przybyszach z innych planet, a także postapokaliptyczne utopie i moje własne cyberpunkowe rojenia. Nie wiem jak opisać ten kompleks językiem ludzi, ale z pewnością znajduje się we Wszechświecie rasa zdolna właściwie nazwać poniższe zjawisko. Panie i panowie, pojazd wylądował.

French architecture is not my speciality, but while being here it's difficult not to notice the special position this genre of art holds in the country of the Seine, Loire, Moselle, Rhone, Rhine and Saône. Beginning with the grand axis of the Louvre-Arc de Triomphe-Grand Arche in La Défense - at the end of which, a fact known to few (including the undersigned), lies Cergy-Pontoise, the place of my exile, which is certified by a corny laser visible at night - through the Hausmannian redisigning of Paris, the Eiffel Tower, other edifices, like François Mitterrand Library or Arab World Institute, and finally more peripheral projects, such as my university and the rest of the so-called Grand Centre of Cergy, or, Lord have mercy, the Garden of Human Rights in Cergy-Saint Christophe, where the green beam pointing lenghtening the magical axis has its beginning, certifying the brilliance of French engineers for all eternity and a day.
However, the monumental and symbolic architecture is not limited to Ile-de-France. During my recent trip to Reims I've discovered something that really took my breath away. The building of the university there attacked me unexpectedly, reminding me of all the books and movies about extraterrestials I remembered from my childhood, along with all post-apocalyptic utopias and cyberpunk fantasies of my own. I don't know how to describe the place in the language of men, but I'm sure there is a race somewhere in the Universe that knows how to call this phenomenon accordingly. Ladies and gentlemen, the starship has landed.
